Detailed Job Description
The Medical Lab Technician will receive samples, verify patient details and test requests, check sample type, volume, labelling and acceptability, and process specimens according to department protocols. Depending on assignment, the technician may support haematology, biochemistry, clinical pathology, serology, sample separation, slide preparation, urine analysis, basic microscopy, quality-control checks, reagent preparation or sample dispatch to reference laboratories. The role includes operating approved analysers within authorised scope, maintaining daily equipment logs, reporting abnormal instrument behaviour, ensuring calibration or QC issues are escalated and keeping work areas clean and organised. The technician will enter or verify information in the laboratory information system, maintain sample traceability and ensure that urgent tests are prioritised as per clinical need and laboratory policy. Infection-control and biosafety practices are essential, including use of PPE, safe sharps handling, spill management, biomedical-waste segregation and disinfection of surfaces or equipment. The candidate will coordinate with phlebotomy teams when recollection is needed, with nurses or doctors for urgent sample concerns and with senior technologists or pathologists when results appear inconsistent with sample quality or clinical details. Documentation should be complete and factual, including rejected samples, delayed tests, QC logs, maintenance notes and handover information. The role may also involve stock monitoring, expiry checks, participation in internal quality audits and support during external quality-assurance activities. The technician will also support the laboratory’s quality culture by treating every sample as a patient-safety responsibility rather than a routine tube or container. This means checking whether the sample matches the requested test, whether the collection time is relevant, whether haemolysis or clotting may affect results and whether urgent samples are separated from routine batches appropriately. The candidate may need to communicate with wards, outpatient collection points or phlebotomy staff when a recollection is necessary, and should do so politely but firmly. During night shifts or lean staffing periods, the technician should follow the same SOPs and not bypass quality checks for convenience. The laboratory may expect participation in daily temperature monitoring, reagent lot verification, internal quality-control review and housekeeping of retained samples. Good technicians also help prevent delays by preparing workstations in advance, handing over pending tests clearly and informing seniors early when equipment or reagent issues arise. Accuracy, traceability and biosafety will be valued above shortcuts. The technician should also be comfortable learning new analyser workflows, updated test menus and digital reporting processes as the laboratory grows. A professional attitude toward repeated quality checks is important, because reliable laboratory results depend on consistent discipline across every shift, not only on individual technical knowledge.

Licensing / Registration Notes
